Installation of Tally Prime
Tally Prime Software installation process involves 2 key steps
1. Download the Installation set up file from Tally Website
2. Execute the Tally Set Up file to install Tally Software
Download Tally Installation Set Up File – Tally Prime
At Browser, type – tallysolutions.com, the URL of Tally site. The Tally official site will appear.
Click Download, at the top right end corner. A pop up will appear at middle. Click Download link in the pop up.
The Download process progress bar to download file will appear right side. This process will take a while. Wait till the process is over. File folder icon will appear at right. Click on the file Folder icon. The set up file, setup.exe in the folder will appear .
Normally it is downloaded in Users Download folder, or the default Download folder set by user. Now you have to install the setup.exe to install Tally Prime
Tally Software Installation
After Downloading the set up file as explained, click on the downloaded setup.exe file in the folder. Now the Tally Prime Set up pop up will appear showing the Install Application screen. At Application prompt, the name of the Application Tally prime will be shown At Release prompt, the release number of the application version will be shown At Application path prompt, the default Tally Application Path will be shown. By default, the Tally .exe along with all the software files will be installed at this folder. You may change the default folder of Tally Application to install Tally Prime software in any other folder, as explained next. At last line, you get 3 buttons : 1. C:Configure, 2 – O:More Actions, 3-I:Install
Tally Installation Configuration
Click C:Configure button to get Configuration screen showing the Set Up Configuration: At Application Path prompt, the default Application path is shown. To change the default Application Path, click on this prompt and set / select the desired Application path as explained later. Next you get the Tally Prime Installation Configuration options, as explained next.
Desktop Shortcut creation : At Create Desktop shortcut, Type Yes to create desktop shortcut. A Desktop shortcut will be auto created The advantage is that users can load Tally easily just by click the Tally icon right on the desktop itself. However, it compromises security a bit, anyone can quickly load Tally. But we recommend to use Tally Icon at desktop, until everyone gets used to it. If you typed Yes at Create desktop shortcut prompt, you get the Name of Shortcut prompt to set the Shortcut Name that will be displayed at desktop just below the Shortcut name. You may change the default shortcut name as desired.
Start Entry Menu : At Create Start Entry, type Yes at Create Start menu Entry option, to get S: Start Tally button after Tally installation, as explained later. If you set Yes, then you may change set the Start Entry Menu name, changing the default Start Entry Menu name as displayed. This is alternate way to load Tally in a more secure way from Windows Shortcut (useful when you do create Desktop Shortcut) typing the specified Name.
Other Actions option set up : Having set the Configuration, you get back to the Install Application screen. Now click the second button More Actions to get the following options. For First time Installation of tally Software, click Install New. To load already previously installed application, click on Select Application on Drive. You get back to the Install Application screen.
Tally Installation : Now click the third button Install to install the Tally Software in the folder as specified. Installation process will take a while. Wait till the process is over as indicated by the Progress Bar. On completion of Installation process, Installation successful message will appear.
- Loading from Desktop Shortcut : If you opted Yes for Shortcut (i.e set Yes at Create Desktop shortcut) option, the Tally Application shortcut will appear at desktop.
- Loading from Windows Start button : If you have opted for Start Tally button ( set Yes at Create Start menu Entry option), you will get S:Start Tally button. Click it to load tally.
Tally Software Set Up options
Now Tally software would get loaded. And the Application set up popup will appear, showing following default values, for reference.
- At Country prompt, India will appear.
- At Accounting Terminology prompt, India / SAARC will appear
- At Company Data path, the Tally default data path will appear.
At the bottom, 2 buttons C: Configure and A: Accept will appear Tally Software Configuration : To change default option as shown, click Configure button to get the list of Configuration options. Now click on the desired option to change. Another edit prompt will appear to type the changed value.
Default Data Path set up: This way, you can change the default Data path. We recommend to change the default Data path in some directory, other than C drive. In C drive, keep the Tally Software, but keep data in other drive like E, F etc.
Saving the Set Up Options: Having set the installation configuration options as desired, you will get back to the Application Set up screen. Now click the A: Accept button.
Now Tally software installation is over.
Tally Module Set Up : Now you will get Welcome screen to set up License options, with following buttons :
FREE Education version : Click T:Try it for FREE (Education version) to work with Educational Version. You don’t need to pay any license fee. Only some options useful for actual business users are not available in Educational Version. But you get all options necessary to learn Tally.
Next, 3 buttons appear for licensed users.
Download Tally Installation Set Up File – Tally Prime Rel 3
The steps are bit different for Tally prime Rel 3
- Software Download: At Browser, search for the Tally Official site . Click the Tally Download option from Search Results. Get the Tally Prime software download site or Click Here . Click Down load button at Tally Rel 3.0,
Set up Configuration: At Set Up Manager, set Application Name, Application Path, Desktop Shortcut name.
- Windows Security Set Up : At Windows Security Alert screen , The data set up at Configuration is carried for information. Check the Security option. Tally shows default Download Folder Name, Tally Software Name. You may change the default values to Download the Set Up File and Install Tally Software as desired. If any older version of Tally Prime (e.g 2.x or earlier) is existing, install Tally Software in a new folder (change the Application Path Name).
Software Installation: Tally Software is installed in the specified path name, indicated by Progress bar.
First Company creation in Tally prime Rel 3
When you install Tally Prime Rel 3 first time in the Computer, specifying a new folder, you get Company Creation Screen, to create the first Company in Tally. Enter the following essential Data to create Company
- Company Data Path :At Company creation screen, set the Company Data Folder Name. Create Company in Tally prime Rel 3 in a new folder,Thus, you will be able to work with Tally Rel 3 with new Company, and work for older Company with older version of Tally.
- Company Name : Enter the Company name. You should write the Financial Year also at the end of Company Name for identification of Financial Year Data.
- Mailing Name : At Mailing Name , the Company Name is auto Carried. Change it to write full name of the Company (Legal name as shown in Cheque, Invoice etc). Remove the extra words of Financial Year etc.,
- Other Data : Select State from list of State. Country is auto selected by default. Enter Financial Year Beginning from date, The Financial Yera date would be auto carried at Books Beginning from. At Security option, set No.
Saving the Company : The essential data is entered. Leave other non essential fields blank. We will explain Data about other fields later on. At Accept Y/N , type Yes to save the Company.
Company Features set up : The Company Features screen appears. Initially set Yes at Maintain Accounts only. Later on, you may set Yes at the respective options as necessary.
Desktop Shortcut for Tally Prime rel 3 is created as per Name specified. Tally Prime may be loaded by Clicking Shortcut or typing the specified Name at Start Menu.
Start Working with Tally
You are now ready to start working. To Create a Company Click Create Company link at the top right corner. Other Company operations related options also appear here.
Exiting from Tally
To exit, press <esc>. The Quit screen appears. Type Yes to exit Tally, type No to continue working with Tally.

Upgradation of existing Tally Software
Old Tally users, may upgrade the existing Tally Software, or download lates version. Data created with older version of Tally may not be opened with newer version. So, install the upgraded version in new Tally Program Folder. So, the older version as well as new version, both are available in your system. Load the older version to open Tally Data created with Older Version.
There may be several distinct instances of Upgradation / Updates
- Upgrade old Tally ERP 9 to Tally Prime latest release.
- Upgrade old Tally ERP 9 to Tally Prime Edit Log latest release, to comply with Audit Trail requirements.
- Update TallyPrime to the latest release of TallyPrime.
- Upgrade TallyPrime to Tally Prime Edit Log to comply with Audit Trail requirements.
- Update TallyPrime 2.x to TallyPrime 3.x
- Update TallyPrime 3.x to TallyPrime Edit Log 3.x
Upgradation to Tally New Version Normally, the Data of updated release / Version of Tally may be opened with newer Release / Version of Tally Prime. In that case, you may directly upgrade the software. The new updated version will overwrite the older version. You will be able to work with old data as usual, with new features.
However, in case of some newer version, the Data of older version cannot be opened with newer version. For example, data of Tally prime 3.0 cannot be opened with earlier version of Tally Prime. In such case, install the new version in new folder. You may create a new desktop icon for New Version for ease of working. Now migrate the old data in new folder. Work with new version. You may use the older version and open old data only.
It is recommended to upgrade to such new version with new data structure, only at the beginning of a Financial Year. Other wise you may mix up new data entry between old and new version, and both year data may become wrong. When you upgrade to new version, use new version from a specific date. Dont change data in older version.
Upgrading the existing Software
The Tally Administrator may also Update / Upgrade latest version of Tally from Gateway of Tally of existing installed licensed version (or F1:Help>Upgrade option), using TSS license (The TSS License must be renewed.
