Multiple Choice Question (or MCQ in short) is a form of an objective assessment, frequently used in educational testing.

Multiple choice Question consist of a stem, the opening of the question, asking a question, a problem to be solved, or an incomplete statement to be completed. The options (normally 4 or 5) are combination of only one correct answer (called the key) and other wrong answers (called distractors). Respondent are asked to mark the key (the correct answer).

Advantages of Multiple Choice Questions

There are several advantages to multiple choice tests. Questions written by well trained persons objectively selected items constitute a very effective assessment technique. Study shows that reliability improves with well planned and selected set of Questions.

Because this style of test does not require a teacher to interpret answers, eliminating bias on part of examiner. As there are no standard questions, it develops analytical approach, discouraging cramming, on part of students.

Limitations of Multiple Choice Questions

Multiple choice tests are best adapted for testing well-defined or lower-order skills. Problem-solving and reasoning skills are better assessed through short-answer and essay tests. In spite of such serious limitations of Multiple Choice Questions, these are increasingly used as they are convenient to manage large number of respondents spread over large geographical area.
